چکیده

• Vol 10 • August-September 2008 640 Measles is still a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in children in the Middle East. This region has many hard-to-reach populations, causing difficulties in the provision of adequate immunization coverage. There has been concern that measles vaccine may produce transient immunosuppression in malnourished children and thereby increase their risk for the development of infectious diseases in the immediate post-immunization period. Since the Middle East has a relatively high rate of children suffering from chronic malnutrition, it is important to assess the immune response of these children to measles immunization in order to provide assurance that the measles vaccine, while effective in preventing measles, does not increase the risk for other infectious diseases. Israel is officially part of the European Region of the World Health Organization but belongs geographically to the Middle East. Other countries in the Middle East are included in the Eastern Mediterranean Region of the WHO. This paper reviews the progress made in Israel and the Eastern Mediterranean Region of the WHO towards achieving the WHO goal of the elimination of measles by the year 2010. In addition, this review summarizes data on humoral and cellular immune responses to measles vaccine that is relevant for programs targeted at the prevention of measles in populations suffering from malnutrition.

Humoral and cell-mediated immune responses to an early 2-dose measles vaccination regimen in the United States.

BACKGROUND Shifts in peak measles incidence to children <12 months old and the associated high mortality support the study of an early 2-dose measles vaccine regimen. METHODS Fifty-five infants were vaccinated with measles vaccine at age 6 (n=32) or 9 (n=23) months, followed by measles-mumps-rubella (MMR)-II vaccine at age 12 months. A control group received MMR-II only at age 12 months. Meas...

Extract and leaf powder effect of Artemisia annua on performance, cellular and humoral immunity in broilers

The effects of methanolic extract and leaf powder of Artemisia annua were studied on performance, cellular and humoral immunity in 240 Cobb broiler chicks in a completely randomized design. Control group did not receive any treatment. The chicks in the second and third groups were fed with feed which contained 2000 and 4000 ppm plant extract in diet and in the groups 4, 5 and 6 chicks received ...

Evaluation of humoral and cellular immunity of recombinant autolysin protein Staphylococcus aureus in mouse model

Background: Staphylococcal aureus is a gram positive cocci and opportunistic pathogen. Due to the spread of this bacterium to antibiotics resistance, one of the most important ways of prevention is the use of vaccines. In this respect, autolysin protein as one of the adhesion molecule of bacteria plays an important role for binding bacteria to the host cells and cell division. Herein, the role ...

Humoral and cellular immune response after measles vaccination in Taiwan.

Measles immunoglobulin G (IgG) seroepidemiologic studies have been widely used to monitor the effectiveness of measles immunization programs in Taiwan. However, studies about cellular immunity against the measles virus have been lacking. This study surveyed cellular immunity after measles, mumps and rubella combined vaccine (MMR) immunization in Taiwan. Seventy six people between 1 and 80 years...

Profiling of Measles-Specific Humoral Immunity in Individuals Following Two Doses of MMR Vaccine Using Proteome Microarrays

INTRODUCTION Comprehensive evaluation of measles-specific humoral immunity after vaccination is important for determining new and/or additional correlates of vaccine immunogenicity and efficacy. METHODS We used a novel proteome microarray technology and statistical modeling to identify factors and models associated with measles-specific functional protective immunity in 150 measles vaccine re...
